Abuja – An Abuja-based Nutritionist, Aisha Abdullahi, on Monday called for the consumption of beetroot to ensure reduction in the blood sugar level of patients among other health benefits.
Abdullahi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that beetroot consumption helped in lowering blood sugar in hypertensive patients.
She said that beetroot was rich in protein, Vitamin C, A, magnesium, potassium, copper, fibre, calcium and iron, required in combating certain type of diseases.
According to her, the increase in the intake of beetroot decreases the risk of obesity and heart disease.
“Beets are enriched in anti-oxidant such as alpha-lipoic acid which helps to lower glucose levels.
“Consumption of beetroot promotes healthy hair; complexion and also helps to control birth defects.
“Beetroot consumption helps to lower the risk of developing dementia in older persons.
“Beetroot is rich in fibre, which helps aid digestion and increases blood flow in the body,’’ the nutritionist said.
According to the expert, beets are enriched with choline nutrients that aid sleep, maintain cellular membrane, aids in fat absorption and also reduces chronic inflammation.
She said that the consumption of the root could help to build strong immune system due to its high contents of vitamin C.

Abdullahi suggested consumption of the root also because of its butane pigments which help in detoxifying the body and also purified the blood and liver.
“Beetroot consumption helps in the treatment of indigestion, gallbladder and kidney disorders and piles.
“It also treats anemia, constipation, dandruff and also reduces the risk of developing some certain cancers such as lung, skin and colon.
“Beetroot intake helps to prevent cataracts; macular degeneration and reduces cholesterol and triglycerides levels.
“ The consumption of the root also helps to boost sexual hormones, energy and heart health and also helps to speedy healing process of wounds,’’ the nutritionist said.
Macular degeneration is caused when part of the retina deteriorates.
Abdullahi, however, called for beetroot consumption in moderation due to its high contents in nitrate, adding that high intake of nitrate
could be harmful.
According to her, excess intake of the root can cause bodily fluids to crystallise.
The nutritionist advised those with kidney and bladder stones to avoid excessive intake of it. (NAN)
