Former Nigerian Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili has expressed her solidarity with activist Aisha Yesufu over her refusal to recite the new national anthem.
Social media went agog on Friday night after a video surfaced showing Yesufu comfortably seated while the new anthem was sung at an event.
Aisha declared that the new anthem was not hers and she would not recite it, instead she would stick to the old anthem.
Supporting the activist, Oby in a tweet on Saturday said president Tinubu breached constitutional provisions and process for banning the “Arise O Compatriots” and bringing back “Nigeria We Hail Thee”.
She wrote while quoting Aisha’s video:
“Definitely #NotMyNationalAnthem as I already publicly conveyed””
In my case, whenever and wherever the National Anthem is called for, I shall continue to sing #AriseOCompatriots as #MyNationalAnthem. “The Lawmakers @nassnigeria and the @NGRPresident grievously breached the Constitutional provisions and process for amendment of legislation and therefore cannot foist another National Anthem on us.”I refuse to join them in the Kangaroo Act of violating the Constitution.
Nigeria is a Constitutional Democracy and must be so governed”.
