Abuja- The Police on Tuesday arraigned Umar Abubakar, 34, a car washer at Wuse Zone 2 in an Abuja Senior Magistrates’ Court for alleged theft of N550, 000 from a car.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Gideon Ekomson, told the court that Mr Abubakar Gwandu of Bureau de Change, Wuse Zone 4, on Nov. 13 gave the accused a car to wash for him.

He said Gwandu reported at the Wuse Zone 3 Police Station on Nov. 21 that he handed over the car key to the accused so that he could wash and clean the internal compartments.

Ekomson said that after the accused had finished washing the car, he gave the key to an unknown person, now at large.

According to Ekomson, the accused is suspected to have conspired with the man to abscond with the car.

The prosecutor added that the car was later found where it was packed but the money was no longer inside.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and theft.

Ekomson said the offence contravened sections 79 and 287 of the Penal Code.

Senior Magistrate Folashade Oyekan granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum who must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.

The magistrate said one of the sureties must be a civil servant on GL 6 or above, and adjourned the matter until Dec. 10 for hearing. (NAN)
