Lagos – The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) on Monday called on the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) to urgently put measures in place to promote professionalism among its members.
The Commissioner for Insurance (CFI), Alhaji Muhammed Kari, made the call in a statement on Monday in Lagos.
“We can ask ourselves how many of CIIN-certified members exhibit and sustain the spirit of the profession.
“How many insurers conduct businesses in line with the ethics, standards and principles that guide the insurance profession?’’ Kari asked in the statement signed by NAICOM’s spokesman, Mr Rasaaq Salami.
He said that NAICOM was prepared to support CIIN at all times in its efforts to move forward.
“In my message at the investiture of the new President, Mrs Funmi Babington-Ashaye, on July 25, I challenged the institute to urgently reinvent itself as a professional body.
“There is need to update the institute’s curriculum to adopt best practices.
`We look forward to a day when a member will be de-certified by the institute for unprofessional conduct.
“Cases abound around us in other professions where privileges of a practitioner were withdrawn for unacceptable acts.
“ If there is an institute to complement the efforts of the commission to crush abysmal acts, it is CIIN,’’ Kari said.
