ABEOKUTA – Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, on Thursday called for the establishment of road safety clubs in both public and private schools across the country.
Soyinka, the pioneer Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), made the call in his remarks at a mega rally organised by the commission at Asero Park, Abeokuta.
Speaking on the subject, “Safety on Nigeria Roads”, Soyinka observed that the establishment of the safety clubs would strengthen the campaign of the commission at a faster rate.
He also said that the FRSC was a“ preventive medicine“ meant to prevent accidents on the nation’s roads and should remain independent of the Nigeria Police.
The current Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, spoke on the theme “Towards an Enduring Safe Road Culture in Nigeria,” at the event.
Boboye said that the vital functions of the commission include advocacy, education and enlightenment of road users.
He also identified four key areas of education and enlightenment for drivers.
“Drivers need to be educated in the areas of overloading, alcohol consumption, poor condition of vehicles and making phone calls while driving,’’ he said.
In his contribution, Mr Sunday Yeye, State Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), said that the union was ready to cooperate with the FRSC to reduce accidents on the roads.
Commenting on members’ attitudes on the road, Yeye said that the union usually disciplined erring members reported to the secretariat.

He, however, urged the government to make more roads motorable.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that members of the NURTW, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria and commercial motorcyclist associations were present at the rally. (NAN)
