The Act will promote efficient management of criminal justice institutions, as well as ensure speedy dispensation of justice.
The Act will equally help to protect the rights and interests of suspects, defendants and victims.
It will further merge and consolidate the Criminal Procedure Code of the North with the Criminal Procedure Code of the South.
The Act will also unify the criminal procedure of the Federal High Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with that of all federal high courts in the country.
In his remarks, the Senate President, Senator David Mark, observed that the passage of the Bill would go a long way in repositioning the criminal justice system in the country.

He commended the efforts of lawmakers and the various committees at ensuring that the bill was passed into law.
“The efforts we have all put into passing this bill goes to show how important it is,” Mark said.
Meanwhile, the Senate has approved the appointment of Ambassador Abdullahi Shinkafi as a member of the Federal Character Commission (FCC).

The report of the Committee on Trade and Establishment and Public Service on the Oil and Gas Export Free Zone Authority Amendment Bill 2015 was, however, deferred to another legislative day.
The decision to defer the report followed the absence of the sponsor, Senator Robert Borofice.
Also on Tuesday, the Bill for an Act to provide for the Establishment of the Nigerian Council of Food Science and Technology also passed Second Reading on the floor of the Senate.
