Lagos  –  A 68-year-old lodger, Ibrahim Bachi, who allegedly defrauded Nature Care Hotel, Ajah, Lagos, of N90,000 was on Friday charged before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Bashi, who allegedly lodged at the Hotel for three days and was unable to pay the debt he incurred for lodging and feeding, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and theft.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge preferred against him and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Philip Osijiale, told the court that the offences were committed on March 16, at No. 4, Illoh Close, Thomas Estate, Ajah, Lagos.
Osijiale said the accused claimed that he was a Chief Engineer on board a Ship, who came to Nigeria from Ivory Coast with the ship and was robbed.
He said that the accused lodged in the Hotel for three days and incurred a debt of N90,000.
“The accused gave the excuse that he was expecting money from his wife through Western Union Transfer, to enable him to offset his debt but no money was sent to him,’’ he said.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 313 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The Magistrate, Mrs Memunat Folami, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Folami said that the accused must produce two responsible sureties, who are related to him by blood and adjourned the case till May 16, for continuation of hearing. (NAN)
