Washington – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is concerned about the ongoing violence in Nicaragua and is closely monitoring the situation in the country, United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a news briefing on Wednesday.
“We’re very much concerned about the ongoing violence, it is a situation that Guterres has been following closely,’’ Dujarric told newsmen.
The media reported that 14 civilians were killed in Nicaragua on Sunday during raids.
On April 18, protests erupted in Nicaragua after the government proposed reforms that envisaged an increase in the amount of employers’ and workers’ payments to social insurance funds.
President Ortega already canceled the proposed reforms, but the rallies did not stop and according to the latest information 220 have died in the protests.
On Monday, the Nicaraguan government and the opposition resumed the national peace dialogue mediated by the Catholic Church and the representatives of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
