LAGOS – The University of Lagos (Unilag), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) are the most searched for universities in Nigeria, the Nigeria office of Google said on Thursday.
This is contained in a report issued by Google and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
The report was signed by the Google Communication and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa, Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade.
It said that the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and the University of Ibadan occupied the fourth and fifth positions respectively.
It said that further among the top five universities showed that OAU peaked over others in May, while Unilag remained in the first position since 2013, except in May.
It added that Google, in a comparative study of 129 Nigerian universities using its search trends tool, discovered that Nigerians were more interested in federal than private and state universities.
“From our search, seven of the top 10 Nigerian universities are federal.’’
According to the report, there were deep searches for the word “university’’ from December, 2013 to January, 2014.
It said that the searches grew but not as high as it was in May, 2013. [eap_ad_1] It noted that the state with the highest number of searches was Oyo, followed by Osun and Adamawa.
“Everyone, expecting to see Lagos being the state with the highest number of searches, because of Unilag’s number one position, is in for a surprise.
“Lagos did not even come among the top seven,’’ it added.
It said that the internet was playing an ever-increasing role in decision-making.
“Students are online searching and consuming content in all forms, when deciding whether or not to go to university and which universities to apply for.
“We expect that, as many more universities expand their use of online tools for marketing, and the number of online users in Nigeria continues to grow, these numbers will continue to go up,’’ it said.
