ENUGU – The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, says it has restored potable water to the Enugu Campus of the university, after 15 years of scarcity of the essential commodity.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Benjamin Ozumba, made this known on Thursday in Enugu while briefing newsmen on the institution’s 54th Founder’s Day.
He said that the dearth of potable water on the campus had been one of the greatest challenges faced by the institution.
“When l was inaugurated as the 14th VC of the institution in June, l promised to give priority to the restoration of water in the school.
“I gave the injunction that water must flow and our prayers have been answered. We must commend the committee that carried out the task.”
He said that it was his desire for the institution to bring up students who would compete favourably with their peers across the world both in character and learning.
Ozumba said that the institution had stepped up the provision of infrastructure to give the students and staff a sense of belonging and for them to feel what obtains in other climes.
“It is unacceptable for the students to be washing their clothes with bare hands. The students need washing machine to do their laundry now that we have restored water flow.
“We are raising men and women who should belong to this century.” [eap_ad_1] Ozumba said that plans had been concluded to set up internet connectivity around the campus for the usage of staff and students.
“Within the next two months, there will be Wi-Fi connection all around the campus. Every student that comes in here, must have access to a laptop at a much cheaper rate,” he said.
He said that the Founders’ Day was a day of thanksgiving for the establishment of the institution.
“We are using the occasion of our Founders’ Day to pay tribute to our fatherland and to all those who have contributed to its well-being and progress.
“My overall agenda is to provide the university the leadership needed to become an academic giant and pacesetter in the quality of its scientific research and level of innovative teaching,” he said.
The event was also used to mark the 54th anniversary of UNN and 100 days in office of the Vice Chancellor. (NAN)
