Lagos – The Lagos State Command of Vigilance Group of Nigeria (VGN) says it has trained and deployed 5,000 personnel for surveillance in strategic areas of the state to avert insurgency and criminality.
The Lagos Commander of the group, James Udoma, made the disclosure while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday.
He told NAN that those personnel were also trained to avert other acts of criminality during the Yuletide.
“We are aware of the insecurity in Lagos and the insurgency going on in the country.
“This is why we have prepared our men in every local government area because we are closer to the people.
“We have also trained our men on how to curb and manage any form of crisis.
“We have instructed our men to work round the clock and make sure they are on 24 hour surveillance in every area of Lagos State,’’ he said.
Udoma restated that the group was ready to work with the Lagos State Government and other security agencies to make Lagos a crime-free state.
“We are very ready to give relevant information to the police.
“All these are aimed at making sure the insurgency in other parts of the country does not affect Lagos State.
“Our men have also been trained to apprehend criminals who take advantage of the traffic situation to rob motorists and hand them over to the police,’’ he said.
The commander appealed to the state government to come to the aid of the organisation, adding that the group needed operational vehicles.
“We need vehicles, especially for our operations,’’ he said.
Udoma also advised residents of the state to report any form of suspicious movement to any security agency or any of the group’s unit around.

“This will help us to protect the residents from any attack by criminals,’’ he said.
The commander urged the residents to be security conscious, adding that the command would collaborate with other security agencies in the state to secure lives and property during the Yuletide. (NAN)
