Damaturu- The World Food Programme (WFP) on Wednesday said it was prepared to deliver food and nutrition, water and sanitation support to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in their home communities in Yobe.
Mrs Denise Brown, the Director of Emergencies of the WFP said this when she led a delegation on a courtesy visit to Government House, Damaturu.
She said that the WFP and UNICEF were in Yobe and Borno to assess the challenges affecting the pushing out of support programmes beyond Maiduguri and Damaturu townships.
“We are here together with UNICEF to work out ways of working together to support the ongoing response programme.
“We want to collectively look at delivering food, water and sanitation to the affected areas and work out a security system to safely deliver support to the communities,’’ Denise said.
Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam in his message to the team said the visit would provide the government and the support groups, an opportunity to explore areas of collaboration.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Abubakar Aliyu, said the joint efforts would facilitate rehabilitation, reconstruction and resettlement of the displaced communities.
He also said life was returning to normalcy in the displaced communities.
“Our major challenge now is how to create favourable conditions for the IDPs to return to their respective communities and continue with their normal lives.
“One of the biggest challenges before us and our development partners is that of resettlement, reconstruction and rehabilitation of the affected areas” Gaidam said.
The governor, therefore, solicited the assistance of WFP and other humanitarian organisations to provide more support to the displaced persons and other vulnerable groups in the state.
