Lagos – Mr Dayo Saka-Fafunmi, Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Environment, has appealed to the residents of the state to avoid actions capable of degrading the environment during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Saka-Fafunmi – in Lagos on Thursday that such environmental abuses would have negative effects on the health of residents.
“Residents should try, as much as possible; to keep their environments clean because it is what we throw into the environment that the environment throws back at us.
“In this festive period, I want to urge residents of Lagos to be wary of negative environmental activities.
“Residents should not over carbonise the environment; cooking with firewood should be discouraged during the festive period,” the lawmaker said.
The chairman said that the environment determined the existence of any human being and added that nature had been in existence before the creation of man.
Saka-Fafunmi said, “Nature does not need human beings; it is human beings that need nature to survive.”
He said that the state had been faced with a lot of environmental challenges, including dumping of refuse in canals and drainages.
The committee chairman said that such environmental pollutions had led to flooding and outbreak of diseases in the past.
The lawmaker said that the nation would not have been plagued with some diseases if people had taken good care of their environments.

“The nation has lost a lot of children, youths and adults of great dreams and destinies because of our negative attitudes to our environments.
“Cleanliness of our environment remains the solution to most of our health challenges. The rate at which we go to the hospital for treatment will reduce if we maintain clean environments,” he said.
The chairman said that regular sanitation and tree planting were part of the measures the state had taken to reduce the harsh effect of environmental abuse.
The lawmaker, who noted that the clamour for industrialisation had its attendant environmental challenges, urged government to put necessary actions in place to forestall environmental pollution. (NAN)
