OWERRI – The Imo State Government has directed mechanics operating within Owerri, the Imo capital, to relocate to Orji and Nekede mechanics villages, a statement said on Monday.
A statement signed by Mr Kennedy Amanze, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Industry and Non-formal Sector, said the Commissioner, Mrs Ugochi Nnanna-Okoro, gave the directive in Owerri.
The statement said that the two weeks grace period given the mechanics had expired and that the task force set up by the government to enforce compliance with the order would soon begin work.
“Government will no longer tolerate indiscriminate location of mechanic workshops within the state capital pending the final movement to the designated locations.’’
The statement frowned at a situation whereby abandoned vehicles were parked along the streets.
It noted that all over the world, artisans were located in clusters outside the city centre, adding that the relocation of mechanics was in the interest of the mechanics.
It further advised the mechanics to obtain forms from the ministry for the allocation of spaces to enable the government to provide more viable environment for them. (NAN)
