In a recent interview on Boiling Point Arena, Dr. Titus Olowokere, a prominent economist and President/CEO of the United States-Nigeria Trade Council, proposed measures to alleviate hunger in Nigeria.
His suggestions include establishing a large-scale Food Bank for contributions from wealthy individuals and companies, aiming to address wealth distribution imbalances and foster a more equitable society.
Speaking on the current affairs program, Olowokere urged the government to promptly implement the Food Bank and release stored grains to assist economically disadvantaged Nigerians.
He also advised citizens to cut back on extravagant spending, emphasizing the need to prioritize essential needs over parties and luxuries.Acknowledging the challenges caused by the removal of the oil subsidy, Olowokere defended President Bola Tinubu, attributing the country’s predicament to economic complexities predating Tinubu’s term.
He highlighted issues like pledged crude resources as loan collateral, a lean treasury, and an over-reliance on oil revenue, stressing that the challenges are a result of cumulative economic missteps over time. While not absolving Tinubu from scrutiny, Olowokere emphasized the need to view the situation as a national problem rather than engaging in a blame game.
The interview also featured Prof. Farooq Kperogi, a notable columnist, and Oba Prof Saka Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, as keynote speaker.
