Abuja – Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers, has described Rivers Angels Football Club, as “worthy ambassadors’’ of the state for winning the nation’s women’s Federation Cup.
Mr Simeon Nwakaudu, Special Assistant to the governor in charge of Electronic Media quoted the governor as making the commendation in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday in Abuja.
He said that Wike congratulated the management and players of the club for winning this year’s Women’s Federation Cup and assured them of his support.
The governor said that the government and people of Rivers are proud of the team for its gallantry in women football.
“The government and people of Rivers state are proud of the exploits of our female footballers, who won the 2016 Women’s Federation Cup.
“I assure the players and management of the club the continued support of this administration to ensure that they sustain their place as worthy ambassadors of the state,’ he added.
The governor lauded the sport-discipline and soccer artistry of the team which saw them perform all through the Women’s Federation Cup.
He said that the team would be appreciated by the government and people of Rivers.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that Angels defeated Bayelsa Queens FC, 5-3, in a penalty shoot after a goalless draw in regulation time.
The match was played at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, on Sunday.
NAN reports that by this victory, Rivers Angel had won the Women Federation Cup for the seventh time.
