New York – Hollywood institutios on Friday have been forced to adapt as the coronavirus completely upends the film industry, closing movie theatres nationwide due to social distancing measures.
Earlier, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association said with more movies arriving on demand instead of opening in theaters, for the first time ever, it would accept film submissions for the Golden Globes that does not play in theatres.
Normally, a film is required to have a seven-day run in a Los Angeles theater and have a screening for voters to be eligible for the Globes.
However, the 2021 ceremony, to be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the rule will not be enforced for movies released between March 15 and April 30.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has a similar rule for the Oscars that have come under recent scrutiny independent of the coronavirus, because of the rise of streaming services.
