Calabar- Many residents of Calabar now patronise imported second hand clothes to use for the forthcoming Christmas celebrations.
A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) investigation showed that the inhabitants visit the popular Beach Market located on the bank of Calabar River where they access the used wears.
Our Correspondent found that women also troupe to the market to buy wears for themselves and their children, usually at affordable prices.
A second hand cloth dealer at the market, Miss Ann Umoh, told NAN that she was experiencing increased patronage, saying this was common with Christmas season.
“Though people complain of lack of money they are still able to buy clothes for themselves and their loved ones.
“I have just opened a new bale of materials and you can see how people are rushing to make selection. So, it is all in the spirit of the season, ‘’ Umoh said.
Another dealer, Miss Ebele Chukwu, said that she used to shuttle between Calabar and Aba to sell her wares and that the rush was normal during Christmas seasons.
A resident, Mrs Esther Agbiji, said that she had been buying second hand closes for all occasions, including Christmas.
Agbiji said that the use of imported second hand clothes was no longer for ordinary Nigerians alone.
A student, Miss Mary Akpan, said that the market was the most suitable place for students to make purchases.
“Apart from Christmas period, I and my friends always come here to buy clothes. One only needs to ‘bend down very well’ and select the good ones,” Akpan said. (NAN)
